I tell you what folks....I haven't got a chance to go Turkey hunting for two years, so this year I just had to go. My luck, it rained everyday I was out. For those of you who have hunted in north central Kansas...It just aint easy...lots of cuts, draws, small groups of trees...seeing turkeys is easy, but getting the chance to get close before they see you...well can seem impossible...now on with the story.
My buddy and I were out driving looking walkin in hunting. We happen to spot a strutter out in an open field with 8 hens. The only thing between us and the turkeys was a small depression filled with trees, with looked vary optimistic for a stalk. We slowly made our way to the edge of the field. We heard hens cackling, the strutter gobbling, and to our surprise several half gobbles from jakes we hadn't seen yet. We had about 50 yards between us. As we crept up we spotted a doe who had pegged us. She was vary curious and cautiosly walked closer and closer. 10 yards away actually, but i imagine because the wind was blowing in our face. Eventually she trotted off. We had a slight embankment to sneak up before we would be eye to eye with these elusive turkeys. The funny part comes when you have to guys, military experienced, deciding to low crawl up a little hill, when its pouring down rain, with 4 inches of mud.... but hell we made it... The strutter lets just say, he left unannounced...we popped up ambush style on these turkeys and in a panic the tried to flee the scene...but there aint nothing gettin passed my mosseburg 12 gage with 3 inch nitro magnum shells... I knocked one down...and my buddy hit the same turkey twice...and it still got away...I ended up getting a jake...its not the biggest, but it made nice dinner when we fried up the breast with some tasty batter and sauce....it was a great hunt....
